“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” (Gal. 6:9; NASB)
Stepping up and helping someone in need is one of the most rewarding things we can do in life. It’s a great feeling to know that you were able to help ease someone’s pain or provide a service that was needed. Even if it doesn’t completely fix their situation, just knowing that you were able to contribute in some way feels good.
When I refer to “someone in need” I’m not just talking about the homeless or destitute, although they qualify as those in need. We all have needs that are beyond the daily physical needs such as food and clothing. Sometimes emotional needs can seem more important or immediate than physical needs, and when those needs aren’t met, they can result in loneliness, hopelessness, depression, or just an overall feeling of “what’s the use.” When the Lord told us to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) He meant the kind of love that God has for us. God cares about our well-being. He cares about our physical needs, our emotional needs, and our spiritual needs. He provides for all of those needs in many ways, but most often through other people, and if you’re willing, He will provide for someone through you.
Even though helping someone can feel good, it can also be discouraging and tiring if whoever you’re helping seems unappreciative. In fact, you may even feel as though it’s not worth your time and energy to help if they’re not appreciating it. I have talked with many who are just tired or giving of themselves when those receiving don’t seem to care. This feeling of not being appreciated becomes a problem if you’re motivation for helping is mainly to feel good about doing it. A Christian’s motivation for doing good should be to serve God. If you remember that in doing good for others you are blessing the Lord, you’ll find you will not get tired or discouraged regardless of how your goodness is received.
The Scriptures tell us that God will not forget the love you show to others (Heb. 6:10). They also assure us that what we do for those in need, we are actually doing for the Lord (Matt. 25:40). Doing good for others will reap rewards in your life in ways that are completely unrelated to the acts of kindness you perform. Gal. 6:10 says “while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people…”. We are to do this not just because it feels good, but because it is what Jesus taught us to do through His life on earth. Do good things for others at every opportunity as your service to the Lord. The rewards are endless.
