“God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” (1 Cor. 10:13b; NIV)
It is seldom easy to give things up we’re used to doing or having once we find out they are not good for us. In the process of accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life, repentance is required. To repent of something is to turn away from it intending not to return to it. If you stop doing something today because you know it’s wrong, but also know if the right situation comes up, you will probably go back to it, then your repentance is not sincere. The Bible tells us:
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”
(2 Cor. 7:10)
True repentance does not lead to wishing you had never given something up. Once you’re saved, your desire should be to please God with the way you live your life. It can be difficult to give things up such as using filthy language or telling little white lies, especially if you’ve been doing them all your life. Maybe you have a problem with being judgmental or with gossiping. These are habits that can be hard to break. You might feel as though there’s temptation at every turn, and you’re probably right. There will be temptation all around that threatens to pull you back to your old behavior even if you have the best intentions.
The Word tells us that “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.” (1 Cor. 10:13a) This is an evil world. As Christians, we have an enemy who wants to corrupt, deceive, and destroy us. Ultimately, we belong to Christ, but as long as we are in this world, there will be the temptation to do the wrong things. That’s why it’s so important to understand that Jesus is with us at all times to help us overcome in times of temptation. Scripture says:
“But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Cor. 10:13c)
God does not remove temptation. He provides ways for us to deal with the temptation so as not to fall to it. Prayer and obedience are essential in the fight against temptation. Every time we do the right thing despite being tempted to do wrong, we get stronger. God blesses obedience and right heart motive. Stand strong in the face of temptation and watch God take over and show you the way out.
Have a great week and God bless.
